This week I immersed myself into being an artist. I attended three different art groups at Feilding Art Centre and turned my focus from fine detailed graphite drawings to playing with soft pastels. This first drawing I did was on A2 butcher paper, flat on a large table. The paper was not so flash in quality but the intention was to just play with a medium I have not used in years – soft pastels. I watched myself ‘trying’ to make a couple of drawing happen and frankly, they were shit! And then I took several deep breaths, turned the page, picked up the black pastel and let go. With big sweeping movements, messy, dirty hands – this is what came about! Such fun!

I saw on Instagram some art that captivated me… chroism_art, Yuto Otsuki. I didn’t want to replicate what he was doing, but I loved watching him draw and how he contemplated a thought before beginning. Yes! The next day, I tried to recreate the experience of the day before. Using black soft pastel I tried to draw a horses eye from a photo. Nah….I felt my attention being pulled out of my intuition and into the photo, trying to get the light and shapes ‘right’. Good learning. Draw Intuitively, so refreshing for my portrait drawings too.
