Healing of Grief is a process, and it affects us all in such variety of ways. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross wrote in her book On Death and Dying back in 1969, of the five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
This collection of portraits I am creating is called Art For The Heart, to help those grieving to embrace these emotions as a tools for healing, and to bring an awareness that our loved ones have not gone, but rather have change how they are.
The missingness is when we are looking back at what was rather than looking at where these beautiful souls are now – right by our sides and only a single thought away. The feeling of loss and grief is not only associated with death, it is also for those whom we do not have daily contact with now, who may be living in another part of the country or overseas.
Drawing these portraits is a very emotional experience for me, in particular drawing their eyes. I feel them sitting with me, guiding my hands to capture their presence in these drawings. Some I have never met in person, some just briefly. It is always a privilege.
